USB Memory Stick Commonly Reported Faults:

USB Memory sticks function in a similar way to memory cards only with the addition of some extra hardware that allows them to be plugged into USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 ports. This kind of so-called ‘flash memory’ as a general rule will only lose data if the user deletes or formats it so if the data becomes inaccessible without you deleting or formatting it then there would almost definitely be some kind of physical hardware issue. As small and intricate pieces of equipment they are also susceptible to breakages and heavy knocks but it is the internal workings such as the oxide layer that allows for data transfer that is often the most easily damaged

USB Memory Stick Flash Memory Chip Destroyed:

Inside a USB memory stick is a flash memory chip onto which your information is stored. This flash memory (in some cases known as NAND flash) often works using a series of small transistors at either end. It is also known as EEPROM and just like a memory card can cease to function if the memory chip is destroyed. You might think that destroying the memory chip inside a USB stick is difficult to do because of its outer casing but sadly this is not the case; a memory chip can be destroyed by something as simple as sitting down with the memory stick in your pocket

USB Memory Stick Flash File System Corrupt:

Just as a hard drive requires a File Allocation Table to operate so too does a memory stick. This FAT tells the memory stick how to react when it is loaded into a particular operating system and if the FAT is corrupted then you will find that you are unable to load data from or write data to the stick. This can occur for a number of reasons but its most common occurrence is when a computer or other device supporting USB suffers a power surge or sudden loss of power without properly completing the read/write operation. We at bracknell data recovery have many years of experience dealing with the problems caused by corrupted FAT systems on USB sticks. Contact us for more information

USB Memory Stick Deleted or Reformatted By Mistake:

We’ve all done it; we’ve all formatted or deleted something in error. And using USB memory sticks is no exception. Deleting or formatting a USB memory stick immediately renders the data unreadable to you the user but not to us here at bracknell data recovery. With our knowledge and experience of USB formatting and deletion and up to the minute recovery software there is a high probability that we can recover your missing data provided you have not reformatted the USB stick after your initial format or written new information to it

USB Memory Stick No Longer Compatible With Your Computer’s Operating System:

Have you tried plugging your USB into your computer, Mac or other USB device only to find it will not recognise it? If you have then there may be a problem with the integrity of the device. It may be something as simple as a bad connection in the USB port or something more serious such as a bad memory chip or degraded oxide layer. You may also find that inserting your USB Stick into your computer’s USB port will bring your computer to a halt, causing it to stall or even freeze and need a reboot. If so then there is most certainly a problem with the memory stick and it is best not to continue trying and use it. Contact us at bracknell data recovery and we will be able to advise on the best course of action especially if you need to recover the information contained on that specific USB stick
