Data Recovery Bracknell

Hard drives, SSDs, NVMe, RAID sets, NAS boxes and memory cards, recovered for customers in Bracknell, Berkshire and London through the post.

A desktop drive that now makes a ticking noise instead of starting up normally. An NVMe module that has quietly disappeared from the BIOS instead of being listed there. A four-bay NAS box that lost its second disk during a rebuild, on the day everyone needed it. A card back from a weekend shoot that reports itself as being empty. Each one of these cases has been delivered to us before and is nothing out of the ordinary, and only a handful of them actually turn out to be the end of the matter. It will cost you absolutely nothing to find out which data remains readable, and if there is recovery work worth doing, the figure is written down before anyone opens anything.

Nothing to pay for the answer itself.

Most Bracknell jobs follow the same format. First comes a quote, then the media travels to our Guildford bench. Once you have been told about the data that can be read back and how much it would cost, you make a decision at your leisure. Being told is never the part you pay for.

There's no charge for finding out, and the price given after this is fixed. Each band is published here instead of being held back until you ring: £250 + VAT for each card or stick, £300 + VAT for each drive or SSD, from £500 + VAT for an array. All of them are set out on the data recovery cost page.

One bench, every way storage stops

The same workbench and the same two hands are used for a broken pen drive as they are for a twenty-disk SAN. Nothing is priced until someone has taken a look at what you've got; once that happens, one service covers everything, whether that is files accidentally erased, volume corruption, drives dropped down stairs, electrical surges through boards or platters that will no longer turn. Choose a device from the grid, or call and tell us about it in whatever language you want to use (the person answering has worked with these faults since the time when storage was measured in megabytes, and does not follow a script).

// how a job runs

Four steps, first call to files returned

step 01

Say what happened

Call 0800 689 0668, or fill in the diagnostic form and it will do the questioning. Tell us about the problem using whatever description you would give to a neighbour. No vocabulary test is being set here.

step 02

Send it to Guildford

After receiving your quote, send it by tracked, insured post (or a courier you book yourself) from a Berkshire, Surrey or London address and it is on the bench the next working day. Alternatively, you may prefer to hand it in personally at our Guildford lab, approximately forty minutes by road on the A322 and the A3, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5:30pm, with no prior appointment required. We do not collect.

step 03

The diagnosis, free

Once it is booked in, the clock is 2 working days. You are then told what has failed, given an honest read on the odds, and handed one price that will not move.

step 04

Files come home

Approve this figure and everything recovered is returned to you on an encrypted drive, which normally takes 2 to 4 working days on a single disk.

// getting the media to the bench

Booking a device in — what actually has to happen

Nearly all of the jobs that we see arrive by parcel. Firstly you need to get a quote, either over the phone or with our free online diagnostic; once that has been done, sending the drive by tracked, insured post is one of the calmest ways to move a drive that may be struggling anyway, and most drives handed over in Berkshire, Surrey or London will arrive on the Guildford bench the very next working day.

Is the hard drive still bolted into a machine, whether that is a laptop, a tower, an iMac, a MacBook, a rack server or a DVR stored under the till? Get a quote first, then pull the drive out of the machine and send only the bare drive (never the entire machine): from a server the disks come out labelled by bay, and from a DVR you just send the disk. Stripping hardware is not something our lab does, though any repair shop on your high street can do it in about ten minutes. The one case with no way round it is memory chips soldered flat onto the mainboard, which is how T2 and Apple Silicon Macs and certain ultrabooks are built, and that storage is not taken on. Call us first if you're not sure which kind you have. Where the storage cannot be unbolted, there is no parcel to make up.

  • Use sturdy packaging that holds its shape (a rigid carton or a thick, heavy padded mailer) and pack round the unit in such a way that it will stay put and not shift in transit. With a bare internal drive, do not include the caddy, the mains adaptor or the leads, as none of them are wanted at this end. A single external drive is different: send it whole, in its own enclosure, together with its cable and power supply.
  • Print out the shipping and booking-in form (PDF), put your name and mobile number on it along with a sentence explaining how the fault first started, and slip it in alongside the media.
  • Once you have your quote, send it using Royal Mail's Special Delivery through the Post Office so that it travels tracked and covered. Alternatively, you can use your own courier account just as well. As long as someone signs for it here, we are good to go.
  • If you would rather deliver it by hand once you have your quote, the Guildford reception on the address card will take the device over the counter, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5:30pm, without needing an appointment. We have no Bracknell shopfront and no van to collect, and those are the two options that are not available.

With your quote in hand, the name on the parcel wants to be Guildford Data Recovery. Driving it over from Bracknell takes roughly forty minutes along the A322 followed by the A3, and you do not need an appointment; posting it costs you a stamp and a day. Either way, a message goes out to you as soon as the package has been logged onto our system, and two working days after that the diagnostic is finished.

// what customers say

Jobs that ended well

★★★★★

"A Seagate Backup Plus holding fifteen years of family photographs went from clicking to completely silent. It went off to Guildford on the Monday, the price came back on the Wednesday, and the whole lot arrived on a new drive the week after. Not once was I sold anything I had not asked for."

Rachel M · Wokingham
★★★★★

"Our practice NAS dropped a second disk during a rebuild and the support company stopped answering. Every disk was imaged before a thing was touched, the array was put back together from the copies, and eleven years of case files came back. Straight answers from the first phone call onwards."

Daniel K · Camberley
★★★★★

"Two days before a hand-in, my daughter caught her laptop with her knee and left half a USB stick still in the port. The connector was rebuilt, the coursework arrived back on a replacement stick with photographs of what had been done, and the invoice matched the quote to the penny."

Questions we get asked

It doesn't cost anything to find out. After the free diagnostic has run its course you get a single figure in writing, and that price will never budge. Five bands cover everything this bench takes, and these are all of them: £250 + VAT for a memory card, USB stick or pen drive; £300 + VAT for any single hard drive or SSD, NVMe included; £400 + VAT for a CCTV or DVR recorder drive, and the same £400 + VAT for a BitLocker or otherwise encrypted drive; from £500 + VAT for a RAID, NAS or SAN array (the more member disks, the higher the overall charge); and £800 + VAT for a forensic investigation that ends in a full written report. Ransomware is treated like regular storage media rather than as forensic work, so £300 + VAT per drive and from £500 + VAT per array, and payment is required upfront once you have accepted the fixed quote. In most cases you only pay if we recover your data, and that covers logical recoveries, so nothing is owed when nothing comes back. Electronic and mechanical failures, chip-level work, DVR jobs and forensic jobs do not fall under that promise. For physical work you will pay 50% upfront and only owe the remaining balance if we recover your data, while DVR, forensic, BitLocker and ransomware jobs are paid upfront once you accept the fixed quote.
There isn't, and it is better you hear this now as opposed to after a lap around the Lexicon car parks. Bracknell has neither a counter in the town centre nor a unit on the estates off the A329(M); there is nowhere in Bracknell Forest to knock on. Every device is worked at the network lab: Guildford Data Recovery, Building 2, Ground Floor, Guildford Business Park, Guildford GU2 8XH, approximately forty minutes south via the A322 and then the A3. Once you have a quote, that reception does accept devices by hand, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5:30pm, and there is no need to make an appointment before dropping off, so driving over is a real option if you would rather not post it. A large part of the reason a single drive stays at £300 + VAT is that we run one properly equipped bench instead of a row of shopfronts.
Wherever you happen to be, whether that is Wokingham, Crowthorne, Sandhurst, Ascot, Windsor, Maidenhead, Slough, Reading, Camberley or Henley-on-Thames, or just as readily Croydon, Bromley, Sutton, Kingston upon Thames, Wimbledon, Richmond, Twickenham, Hounslow, Ealing or Hammersmith, there's not much to gain by walking a failing drive round three computer shops first, because most of them will probably still send it off to a lab anyway. Students back from Reading and from Royal Holloway at Egham send their coursework drives in every single term. So once you've got a quote, one tracked parcel can get the media onto the Guildford bench the next working day, and a struggling drive will travel so much better boxed up than carried loosely in a rucksack.
Firstly, get a quote over the phone or use our free online diagnostic. Then make sure the device cannot move by wrapping it in protective material, place it into a box that will keep its shape even when under pressure, and add a sheet of paper with your name, mobile number and a line describing how the fault started. Royal Mail Special Delivery tracks and insures the parcel the whole way to Guildford Data Recovery, Building 2, Ground Floor, Guildford Business Park, Guildford GU2 8XH. You can also send it with a courier account of your own. With a bare internal drive, remember to leave the caddy, the mains adaptor and the cable at home, as none of them are wanted at this end; a single external drive is different and should be sent whole, in its enclosure, with its cable and power supply. We do not collect anything from Bracknell and never have done, although the Guildford reception will take a device over the counter, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5:30pm, with no appointment necessary. A message goes out to you as soon as the parcel has been logged.
Not as a service, and it would only waste your afternoon to pretend otherwise. This is a recovery lab rather than a backup provider: there are no contracts, we don't store files in the cloud and there's nothing to sign up for. If you've been searching for data backup in Bracknell after one of your drives has already failed, then recovery is the job actually in front of you, and whatever survives comes back to you on an encrypted drive at £300 + VAT for a single disk. Then treat that copy as the start of a routine worth keeping: three copies of everything important, stored on two different types of media, with one copy somewhere other than the building it came from.
Yes, and a significant portion of most weeks is just that. Emergency jobs are flagged before the parcel even arrives, so their diagnostics are moved to the front of the queue: office servers, the NAS that sits behind a shared drive, a RAID set that drops a second disk midway through a rebuild, a design workstation with a deadline against it. Business recovery is priced on the same published bands as everything else, £300 + VAT for a single disk and from £500 + VAT for an array. The timings aren't stretched to suit the urgency either: 2 working days from booking-in to diagnosis, and 2 to 4 working days for a finished single-drive recovery.
// the ground this covers

Berkshire first, then down the M3 into London

Start in Bracknell Forest and work outwards: Binfield, Warfield, Martins Heron and Bullbrook, then Wokingham and Crowthorne, Sandhurst and the Camberley border, Ascot and Windsor, Maidenhead and Henley-on-Thames. From there, you can follow the whole tech corridor along the M4 from Reading through to Slough. Past the M25, the same bench serves ten London districts as well: Croydon, Bromley, Sutton, Kingston upon Thames, Wimbledon, Richmond, Twickenham, Hounslow, Ealing and Hammersmith. Since every job moves by tracked next-day post, a parcel handed in at Sandhurst is dealt with in the same way as one posted in Hammersmith. A firm whose server has stopped gets a quote first, after which it can start the job at a post office five minutes away (with the disks taken out and labelled by bay) rather than lose half a day travelling round the M25. If an entire office has gone down, the blog clearly sets out what needs to be accounted for in a disaster recovery plan. The home patch is listed town by town on the data recovery Berkshire page, while the capital has a hub of its own at data recovery London.

Across the M25, where a tracked parcel typically beats carrying a drive across town to a shop that would only send it out to a lab anyway:

Files gone? Usually not for good.

The diagnosis is free, the quote is just one written figure, and a single drive or SSD is £300 + VAT.
