The Card Shows Up Completely Empty

A portrait and wedding photographer working out of Windsor was copying a Saturday off her cards on the Sunday morning when the reader dropped out mid-ingest. The card still appears in the machine, at the right capacity, with the right name, and completely empty. Roughly eight hundred frames from a wedding she cannot re-shoot are on it.

Fault classLogical. The card was readable as a device and its memory answered normally. What had been damaged was the index at the front of the volume, written to during the interrupted transfer, which is why the machine could measure the card and not describe it.

Reading the fault

Visible and empty is a very specific fault. The machine can measure the card, so the controller and the memory are both answering. What it cannot do is find the table that says where the pictures start. Without that table there is nothing to list, and an empty folder is the only honest thing the operating system can display.

A reader dropping out during a copy is the classic cause. Cameras and readers update the card's index as they go. Interrupt that update and the index is left half-written, which on a card is a single small region rather than a distributed structure, so damaging it takes out the whole listing at once.

The photographs are untouched, and that is not optimism. Image files occupy the body of the card, which no part of an interrupted index update goes near. What was lost was the description of where they are, and on a card that has not been written to since, the pictures sit in long unbroken runs that are straightforward to find directly.

The one fatal move would be to put it back in the camera. Cameras respond to an unreadable card by offering to format it, and a format writes a fresh index. Worse, some cameras and some card types will trim as they go, which can genuinely discard the pages holding the images rather than merely the reference to them.

The card went behind a hardware write blocker before it was read at all, so nothing could accept the prompts an operating system offers in this situation. It read at full speed with no weak areas, and was imaged in one controlled pass through a bench reader rather than the reader that had caused the problem.

R-Studio parsed the volume from the image and found the index damaged exactly where the interrupted write had reached. Enough survived to rebuild most of the directory; the remainder was recovered by carving raw image structure, which on a card written sequentially by one camera is reliable. Every frame was rendered into a contact sheet and checked visually before the set was written to fresh media, because a raw file that is present and a raw file that opens are two different claims.

All eight hundred and some frames came back, in shooting order, with their original file names reconstructed from the camera's own numbering. She got the card back too, and has been told to retire it rather than shoot on it again.

Cards and USB sticks are £250 + VAT. The fault was logical throughout, so this ran under no fix, no fee and was invoiced after she had opened the contact sheet.

A card that shows up with nothing on it

Take it out and leave it out. Do not put it back in the camera to check, because a camera that cannot read a card will offer to format it and formatting writes over the very structure that has to be rebuilt. Do not run a repair utility on it either. If a reader has cut out mid-copy, suspect the reader as well as the card: cheap readers lose contact under their own heat and will do the same to the next card. Above all do not keep shooting on a card that has misbehaved once, even after a recovery, because the images that follow are written over the space the previous ones occupied.

Where the storage is bolted inside a laptop, a tower, a Mac or a server, free it and post the bare unit: taking machines apart is not work this lab does, and flash soldered flat onto a mainboard, which is how Apple Silicon Macs and a good many thin ultrabooks are built, cannot be taken in at all.
