A boat yard office in Maidenhead keeps its mooring records, invoices and survey photographs on a WD Elements that spends most of the year switched off in a drawer. Silence has two very different causes and they are told apart by current. A drive that draws nothing has an electronics fault: the board is not delivering power to the motor. A drive that draws a surge and then stalls has power reaching a mechanism that cannot turn. Watching the current on a limited supply answers the question in one attempt, without repeating it.
This one drew, surged and stopped, so the board was innocent. That matters both technically and commercially, because it changed what had to be done: not a component repair but a clean-air operation on a seized mechanism.
Months at rest is exactly how a drive seizes. If the heads have not parked cleanly on their ramp, they sit on the platter surface, and given long enough at rest they adhere to it. When the motor then tries to turn, the heads hold the platter and the motor stalls. It is a storage fault rather than a wear fault, and it is common in kit that is used seasonally.
Forcing it to start is the one thing that must not happen. Repeated attempts either tear the heads free, taking magnetic surface with them, or shear the head assembly. Either outcome converts a recoverable drive into a partial recovery at best. The heads have to be released deliberately, by hand, with the case open.
It was profiled once, on a current-limited supply, and the trace was unambiguous: a surge as the motor tried, then a stall, then nothing. That eliminated the board and pointed straight at a seized mechanism, and no further attempt was made to start it.
Opened under laminar flow, the heads were found resting on a platter surface rather than on their ramp. They were released by hand and moved clear, and the contact area was inspected under magnification: a light residue mark and no removal of the magnetic layer. Matched donor heads were fitted rather than reusing sliders that had been in contact, the mechanism was checked for free rotation, and the drive was imaged on DeepSpar behind PC-3000 UDMA. R-Studio read the volume from the image and the records were opened rather than counted.
Mooring records, invoices and the survey photography all came back. The contact area cost nothing, because the mark sat in unallocated space.
One drive, £300 + VAT. Freeing a seized mechanism means opening the drive in clean air, which is mechanical work and outside the guarantee, so 50% was payable upfront with the balance once the yard had checked the recovered records.
Try it once, then stop. Repeated attempts on a seized drive are how heads get torn off the surface, and the difference between one attempt and twenty is often the difference between a full recovery and a partial one. Do not tap it on the desk or twist it sharply, both of which circulate as tips and both of which can shear the head assembly outright. Do not freeze it either. If a drive lives in a drawer for months at a time, get into the habit of running it for ten minutes every few weeks, which keeps the lubricant distributed and the heads where they should be, and keep a second copy of anything you would miss. Send it unpowered and say how long it had been in storage, because that one detail points the diagnosis in the right direction.
