Fine Before Lunch, Gone By The Afternoon

An independent surveyor in Sandhurst has run the same 1TB WD Green as a data disc since 2011, with no operating system on it, purely as the place where reports and site photography go. It answered normally on the Tuesday morning. By the time he came back from lunch it had gone from This PC and from Disk Management both, while the machine itself was perfectly happy. He heard it spin up when he restarted, which is why he assumed it was fine.

Spinning up is not the reassurance it sounds like. The motor starting proves the board is alive and the spindle turns. Everything that has to happen afterwards, and there is a lot of it, happens before the drive is willing to tell a computer what it is. A drive can spin all day and never present itself.

A disc has to read itself before it can be read. Held in a reserved area on the platters are the tables that translate a requested address into a physical place on the surface. Without them the drive has no way of answering a request, so it declines to accept requests at all, which is what absence from Disk Management actually means.

Fourteen years of service is not the explanation, though it is the context. Adaptive tables are rewritten as a drive ages and re-characterises itself, and each rewrite is a chance for something to go wrong. Nothing about the failure was age-related in the way people assume; the surfaces were fine and the mechanism was quiet.

Firmware work is logical work, and that is a commercial distinction as well as a technical one. Rebuilding tables is code and data, not repair to a component, so it sits inside the guarantee. A failed part on the drive's electronics would have produced the same symptom and sat on the other side of the line, which is why the diagnostic comes before the quotation.

It was worked directly on PC-3000 UDMA behind a hardware write blocker, using the mode that speaks to a drive's reserved area rather than waiting for it to come ready, because a drive in this state never will come ready. The table structure was profiled before anything was altered, and the adaptive set was found inconsistent with the drive's own stored copies.

The tables were rebuilt from the drive's own redundant copies, which keeps its calibration intact in a way that borrowed data cannot. It then identified itself correctly and readied without hesitation, and was imaged on DeepSpar in one pass. R-Studio read the volume out of the image, and reports and site photographs from across the last five years were opened to prove the recovery before it was written to fresh media.

Fourteen years of survey work came back complete. The disc was not put back into service, which was advice rather than a technical requirement, and the recovered set went home on a new drive with a second copy alongside it.

A single drive is £300 + VAT. Firmware repair counts as logical, so no fix, no fee applied and nothing fell due until the files had been confirmed. A failure in the drive's electronics would have carried the other terms, and he was told which of the two it was before any work began.

A drive that vanishes while the machine stays happy

Do not initialise it. When a disc stops presenting itself, Windows will sometimes offer to set it up as new, and accepting that on a drive full of work is the single worst available outcome. Do not assign it a letter, do not let a partition tool touch it, and do not keep restarting to see whether it comes back, because if the eventual answer is mechanical then every restart costs something. Hearing it spin is not evidence that it is well. Note down when it was last working and what the machine was doing at the time, unplug it, and send it. The diagnostic separates firmware from electronics from mechanics, and those three sit at different points on the published terms.

Where the storage is bolted inside a laptop, a tower, a Mac or a server, free it and post the bare unit: taking machines apart is not work this lab does, and flash soldered flat onto a mainboard, which is how Apple Silicon Macs and a good many thin ultrabooks are built, cannot be taken in at all.
