The Light Is On and It Keeps Clicking Over

An upholsterer in Kingston upon Thames keeps pattern templates and photographs of finished work on a 1TB Seagate, and lost the lot in an afternoon. The light comes on, the drive clicks over steadily, and nothing recognises it. He took it to a local computer shop first, and they did the right thing: took it out of its plastic case, connected it directly, got the same clicking, and told him plainly it needed a clean room and a lab.

Reading the fault

A lit indicator is evidence of a working power lead, nothing more. On most portable drives the light is wired to the enclosure's bridge board, not to the disk. It will glow happily above a drive that never spins, and it means only that electricity is arriving somewhere.

The shop earned its keep by bypassing the case. The single most useful test on a portable drive is to take it out of its shell and connect it directly, because that separates a failed bridge from a failed disk. Getting the same clicking on a direct connection converts a maybe into a definitely, and it saved the bench from repeating a test that costs a drive a start-up.

Knowing when to stop is a skill, and they had it. Nothing further a general workshop can do improves a clicking drive's chances, and several of the available options make them worse. Sending it on the same day, with an accurate account of what had been tried, is the best outcome that visit could have had.

Clicking is about position, not about power. The heads look for servo marks that tell them where they are over the platter. When those cannot be resolved, the stack retracts and starts again, indefinitely, and the drive never gets far enough to say what it is. Nothing in that sequence involves the files.

It arrived already out of its enclosure, which meant no time was spent re-proving what the shop had established. One profiled start on a current-limited supply recorded the click interval and the current draw, both of which matched a head fault rather than a spindle problem, and that was the last power it saw outside clean air.

Opened under laminar flow, the head stack showed contact damage on two heads while all four surfaces read as unmarked under magnification. Matched donor heads were fitted, alignment set, and the drive imaged on DeepSpar behind PC-3000 UDMA in a single ordered pass. R-Studio read the volume out of the image and the photographs of finished work were rendered on screen rather than trusted from a listing.

Templates and photographs came back complete, which is what unmarked surfaces buy you. The empty enclosure went back in the parcel; it had never been at fault and it still works.

One drive, £300 + VAT. The drive had to be opened, which is mechanical work and is named in the exclusion, so half the figure was settled before the lid came off and the rest once he had seen the files.

A light that comes on while nothing else does

Do not read the indicator as a sign of life in the disk. It reports on the enclosure, and enclosures are the part that rarely fails in this pattern. If a local shop offers to take the drive out of its case and connect it directly, that is a useful test and worth having done, provided they stop there when it clicks. What is not worth having done is repeated attempts, scans, or anything that involves the drive running for minutes at a time, because a clicking head stack damages surfaces while it works. Keep the enclosure, send the bare drive, and mention what has already been tried so the bench does not spend a start-up finding out.

Where the storage is bolted inside a laptop, a tower, a Mac or a server, free it and post the bare unit: taking machines apart is not work this lab does, and flash soldered flat onto a mainboard, which is how Apple Silicon Macs and a good many thin ultrabooks are built, cannot be taken in at all.
